including 20 children were killed. gunned down at the elementary school in sandy hook elementary. the governor said that has given him clear pause. i beg your rick snyder please veto those bills and stop the madness, but here is what he is up against. 24 michigan lawmakers are acting on behalf of alec that conservative group that drafts gun legislation for lawmakers, and alec has been bank rolled by the nra. michigan's alec chair cosponsored the extreme gun legislation that rammed through the house and senate last week. but this is not just about michigan. michigan has been passing some crazy bills these last few weeks, but this is much broader. alec's legislation has been used across the country to weaken gun laws. since 2009, 99-nra-backed alec laws have passed in 36 states. all of those states are states where alec-backed gun legislation has passed. and as a result gun safety laws across the country have gotten incredibly watered down. in arizona you need a permit to cut hair but not to carry a concealed. in mississippi concealed weapons permits last longer t

news. we talked every day this week since the tragedy of sandy hook elementary school last friday, talking every day this week about the need to do something about gun control. and not just after sandy hook but sandy hook seems to be the tipping point after so many of the other mass cars because you saw these 6-year-old kids, angels taken away. let's talk about that. yesterday, expressing a little frustration over president obama not being very specific, yesterday, later in the day, we got some good news on several fronts in this effort to respond to the gun violence in this country in an intelligent and across-the across-the-board way. let me tell you about a couple of things that happened. maybe you don't know. one of the big prior to equity firms, serberus said they were going to drop sell, get rid of the freedom group. the freedom group includes bushmaster, incorporated, whatever it is, the people who make the bushmast ter assault rifle. they got a call from the california teachers association which has a huge huge pension program, and they tol

the tragic shooting at sandy hook elementary school where 26 people were murdered including 20 innocent children. it was a heart wrenching weekend of memorial services, a weekend where the entire nation wept for the 20 children whose lives were stolen away. yet another weekend where the country was forced to come to grips with a horrific gun tragedy. today the awful process of burying the child-victims began. snow with aer pozner and jack pinto were buried. last night in an interfaith memorial service for the victims, president obama delivered a touching eulogy, while at the same time saying it is necessary to take a hard look at our current gun laws. >> obama: in the coming weeks i'll use whatever power this office holds to engage my fellow citizens from law enforcement to mental health professionals to parents and educators. in an effort aimed at preventing more tragedies like this. because what choice do we have? we can't accept events like this as routine. are we really prepared to say that we're powerless in the face of such carnage that the politics are too hard? are we prepared t

innocent victims gunned down at sandy hook elementary school began today. noah posner was the youngest victim. just last month he celebrated his sixth bird along with his twin sister. she was in a different classroom and survived the attack. jack pinto also was laid to rest. his obituary said that he died in sandy hook elementary school in the company of his many friends. >> cenk: one of the teachers, she hid the kids in her closet and took a bullet for them. she was 27 years old. stop this madness. i'm going to talk to michael shure. he'll have news in what the president is planning to do and whether we're going to take action this time around. >> cenk, the president himself is not delineated what he's going to do, nor do we expect him just today to wake up and say this is what our plan is, the white house jay carney was a little circumspect but understanding that there will be some action. the president last night though took to well it was the airwaves, but also to a gathering, an ecumenical gathering of service remembrance in newtown connecticut. here is the president speaking firs

since the tragic shooting at sandy hook elementary school where 26 people were murdered including 20 innocent children. the tears continue today as the coffins of james mattioli and jessica rekos were carried from st. rose of lima roman catholic church to their final resting place. on capitol hill, the pressure continues to mount for legislators to pass meaningful gun legislation. today the brady campaign to prevent gun violence held a press conference in front of the u.s. capitol featuring families whose lives have been affected by gun violence in an effort to make the emotional case for gun control. one of the speakers was a father whose son was in the hallway of sandy hook when the shooting began and was fortunately saved by heroic teacher. >> i'm andre i'm father of bear nikachuk, my son miraculously survived the shooting. every time something like columbine, virginia tech or aurora are happening i would avert my eyes and i will still think something will be done. but all those beliefs were shattered on friday.
seen another guy walk into sandy took with a pipe that said assault weapon on it. and that shows a need for better security in schools. >> stephanie: yeah and we have got to bring logic back into this. you have to look at the last few and say, it is a young mentally disturbed guy that was addicted to violent video games, and you have to look at the whole picture. >> yes, there are all sorts of things. i don't think somebody who is in their 20s, 30s, and 40s is going to be -- i don't think their brain chemistry is going to be changed by what movies they watch or what tv shows they watch or what games they play. perhaps that's true with seven, eight, nine, ten, 11-year-olds. all of those games and movies and tv shows are labeled, and then we have to talk about families, but that doesn't mean we have to stop talking about gun control or mental health. >> stephanie: right. we would have a harder time legally -- that has been tried many times the video games, and it falls under first amendment. >> and there are volunteer ratings on every video game sold. >> steph
and this is "viewpoint." it has now been six days since the tragic shooting at sandy hook elementary school where 26 people were murdered children. funerals continued for the victims as today grace mcdonnell, benjamin wheeler allison wyatt, catherine hubbard and jesse lewis and teacher annemarie was laid to rest. the task force met for the first time today. at the top of the meeting, joe biden stressed the task force will look at all factors contributing to gun violence including mental health and cultural issues. a balanced approach the democrats see as a way to garner republican support for modest gun control. >> gun control in reasonable ways, yes but also mental illness, violence and those kinds of things, when i talk to my republican colleagues in the senate who are pro nra in the last few days, they express that over and over again. but even a balanced approach to curbing gun violence may not be enough to sway house republicans. >> vice president's recommendations come forward we'll certainly take them into consideration. b
